The Tudor World Ghost Tour takes place within the historic building, your host will guide you through in darkness whilst telling of the ghostly occurrences that have taken place within the building and around Stratford upon Avon
What we thought
Stepping through a large gate we find ourselves at the entrance of a cobbled road next to a small wooden hut, where we are met by our ghost tour guide/character actor ‘Winnifred’, a downtrodden maid with a dry sense of humour, cracking jokes about taking photos even before we begin the tour proper.
We are lucky to have attended the ghost tour on a quiet night with a group comprising of just 4 people. As the tour starts we are given a brief run-down of what to expect and one of our number is handed a lantern and instructed to bring up the rear of our party, as we will be making our way through the museum in complete darkness.
We are led up the cobbles and into the museum itself. Interestingly we start the tour in the opposite direction to the self-guided daytime tour, and upon reaching the foot of the staircase that we descended to exit during the day we are informed that the corpse of a man was once found at the foot of these stairs, and that people have reported tripping over nothing on that very spot. During our daytime visit, we thought nothing of it, but this is the very same thing that had happened to me that afternoon on the exact spot she pointed out.
Feeling sufficiently spooked by this we made our way to the top of the stairs and were told another ghostly tale, shocking in itself but in the darkness and being loomed over by mannequins including one in a plague mask this was an even more unsettling experience.
We follow our guide deeper into the museum and along the way hear more stories of the resident ghosts, including a mischievous girl who takes a fancy to people’s jewellery and a truly horrible character named John, who scared the bejesus out of me by following me into the next room and making a groaning noise in my ear, causing me to spring across the room like a scalded cat.
We won’t share more of the ghost stories as we want you to go and experience them for yourself and hear them told by one of the Tudor House Ghost Tour guides on the night.
Our guide Winnifred was excellent and so knowledgeable about the stories and the building itself. You may get a different character/guide on the night but I am sure they are all very well-versed in the stories surrounding the Tudor House.
Conclusion
If you want a spooky night with no jump scares then this is for you, but as we learned first-hand, you may get a fright from an actual ghost whether you wanted jump scares or not.
