Hôtel La Prison – Béziers

Béziers’ small prison “Malapague,” likely built in the 12th century, it gained significance in 1939 when it housed the guillotine for three departments. Overcrowding was chronic, with capacity for 48 prisoners but often holding over 100, even reaching 300. The prison closed in 2009.

The hotel has 50 rooms, all ensuite and all comprised of 2 or 3 original cells, there is a gym, pool and restaurant and they offer tours of the hotel so you can learn more about the former prison.
