Ayvianna Snow, an actor ‘fast becoming the British Queen of Horror’ Shares Her Favourite Films for Halloween with Creepy Attractions…
The Shining – It’s always good to re visit a classic, and The Shining continues to terrify me. It was the first horror film I ever watched, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the genre – it’s such a well-made film with amazing performances!
Little Joe – This is my favourite horror film, directed by Jessica Hausner and starring Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw. The cinematography has a Kubrickian quality and it’s a slow burner; it’s not all jump cuts and gory, bloody deaths; instead, Hausner manages to build a growing sense of unease. The film is disturbing and unsettling rather than flashy. There is a question over whether the lead character, Alice, can truly trust her own perceptions
Blank – A British film directed by Natalie Kennedy, about a struggling writer who tries to cure her writer’s block at a futuristic retreat, only to become trapped there. It is a two-hander about two people trapped together in an impossible situation from which there seems to be no escape. It is a great example of the genre; tight writing, two characters, one location. Nowhere to hide. A truly psychological horror.
Lamb– I love the A24 horror “Lamb” as I believe it did something really interesting with the genre; it was about a childless couple living in rural Iceland, and how their desperation for a child leads them down a strange path. The cinematography is beautiful, and it feels strange and ethereal; it blends horror with fantasy.
Beetlejuice – With the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice I’m overdue a re watch of the classic original 1988 comedy horror – Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder are iconic.
